I undertook a small engineering project with my son this weekend. We built a load bearing trestle bridge out of popsicle sticks. After several iterations, some bridge research visits, and some help from a book called "Big and Awesome Bridges" , we built one. Lucas said it was cool and I think he liked the glue gun the most. We learned that triangles are the strongest load bearing shape in the trestle design. A really fun project to learn about engineering and to make a replica of the Hawthorne bridge design!
Here's the new Tillicum crossing bridge.
