Tenzin Gyatso
Yes ... the sciences are just another method to perceive reality. He's right - that is Tenzin Gyatso. There is no such thing as an atom and as human beings we are self actualizing reality and the universe. That idea still catches me off guard once in a while. No doubt a combination of the nature of our sensory perception and awareness. Compassion is deeper than a word and practising it can help you see the world more clearly. That helped correlate how balance and well being was connected to a better understanding of world. He described a gap between reality and perception and how context and certain "attachment" can distorts world view and our understanding of reality. I enjoyed his words on education and fighting ignorance and when Charlie Rose asked him "Do you think it will Happen (Tibetan Autonomy)?" And he answered "I think so" --- the world stood still and in that moment it was like the motion of quantities. I was unaware that Tenzin Gyatso, at age 20, had met Mao. There is a meeting that I would otherwise find difficult to imagine. He mentioned "Truth, Justice, & "Honesty" for the world and just hearing the words, were refreshing. He didn't seem to harbor any resentment for China and seemed optimistic regarding more Tibetan autonomy and changes in Chinese Policy around Tibet. What struck me the most was how attentively he seemed to be listening and concentrating.
I'll have to add The Universe in A Single Atom (The Convergence of Science and Spirituality) to my reading list.
